Don’t P*ss Off The Fairies
April 2025
Hello, you glorious creatures!
When you don’t want something to end, you will do pretty much anything to avoid getting to that point. Be it not wanting to finish a great book so you can savor it a bit longer, to avoiding writing the penultimate newsletter before the final book in a series releases, it’s human nature not to want something you enjoy to end. That’s a fancy way of saying sorry, I’m a few days late!
I was actually waiting to get the box of THE SCROLLS OF TIME hardcovers so I could show you how spectacular they are. They have arrived and they are stunning. My artist outdid herself on this series; I am madly in love with the look of things. Having the whole series complete on the shelf, butting up to the lares and penates I’ve collected over the years, feels good. It’s a placeholder filled, and I can get excited about the release next month.
I’m a big one for collecting things that speak to me, be it a rock, or a vase, or an owl, or a feather. They all go on my bookshelves in my office, and they all have a story behind them. One of my favorites found treasures is a green slate sign with the sage advice “Don’t Piss Off The Fairies” carved into its face. I found it in Boulder at a funky bohemian tea shop, and it’s now lived in three of my adult homes. I think the day I saw that sign was the day I said to myself, “Someday I am going to write a fantasy novel.” While the Jayne books don’t have fairies, I like to think of the Norns as the guardian angels of the series. Every time I gaze at the green slate sign now, I think of the Norns. It’s a great big full circle, thirty years in the making.
Who are the Norns, you ask? Ah! They are the goddesses of time. Past, Present, Future. Maid. Mother, Crone. They are one and yet separate, as we all are. They live in the now, and they know the fate of every creature in the universe. You will meet the Norns in THE SCROLLS OF TIME, as they are vital to Jayne’s mastering of time.
Believe me, time travel is hard to write. The rules you create must be inviolate, so you can imagine how difficult that is in general for Jayne, but then add in Henry Thorne working his magic on quantum physics. From a young age, Henry has been obsessed with time travel—the Norns might have the answers he seeks. But at what cost?
Yes, Scrolls dives into some very heady stuff.
I’ve never wanted to know the future. I’ve eschewed trips to mediums and psychics, refuse to have my palm read, don’t even really like Tarot, though I find it fascinating as long as I’m not asking what the future holds. But there is one thing I do hope comes to fruition—that you will love the end of this series as much as I do. That you feel I’ve done my job well, that Jayne’s story ends satisfactorily. The Norns tell me this is the case, but I suppose we’ll have to wait until next month to find out for sure.
And with that, I leave you. Until then!!!
